Five questions before building software.
A system should solve a defined job. The choice of technology comes later.
What problem, and for whom?
1. Which task takes unnecessary effort today? 2. Who performs it and in what context? Describing the work with concrete examples helps separate a real need from a wish list of features.
What information and dependencies?
3. What data goes in and what decisions come out? 4. Which systems, permissions and owners are involved? Identifying dependencies early prevents designing an interface the operation cannot sustain.
How will we know it helped?
5. What needs to change in the work for the solution to be useful? Define observable criteria and test a prototype with the people involved before expanding development.
